I'll tell you something that happened not long ago.
In Rome, the (once) Catholic Rome, I visited a fairly well-known minor Basilica. On that occasion I asked the parish priest if I could lend my service by playing for some celebrations. The parish priest seemed quite helpful but he pointed out a problem to me: in the celebrations I had proposed it was not possible to play because there was no one singing. I then suggested that in this case I could simply play within the allowed time even in the absence of anyone singing. The parish priest told me it wasn't possible. But why?
