The trio of composers deemed the top of the Roman School during the Renaissance, the Golden Age, includes Flemish Orlande de Lassus (1530/32-1594), known in Italy as Orlando di Lasso.
Ironically, some have accused the Roman School of being inward-looking, narrow-minded, not very international when in fact two of the trio came from outside Italy (the other, Victoria, was Spanish). In short, I believe that we ought to examine certain biases. In fact, Orlande de Lassus had a truly Italian education but in a context of international life that saw him serve in various courts and countries such as Mantua, Sicily, Milan, Florence, Naples, Munich, so on, and, of course, Rome.
